Brennan Johnson could fall victim to the summer shake-up taking place at Tottenham.
Johnson will go down in Tottenham history after scoring the goal that ended the North London club’s 17-year trophy drought.
The 24-year-old netted the only goal of the game as Spurs beat Manchester United 1-0 in the UEFA Europa League final (21 May). However, the dismissal of Ange Postecoglou on Friday (6 June) proves that winning silverware will not guarantee your future at Tottenham.
And with that in mind, Johnson could be next out the door after a recent transfer development.

Bryan Mbeumo’s signing could mean curtains for Johnson
Bryan Mbeumo is keen to sign for Manchester United this summer. However, Tottenham could look to hijack the deal if they appoint Thomas Frank as head coach.
Frank is interested in moving to North London and is the current favourite to replace Postecoglou, and it has been widely reported that the Dane has asked Tottenham to sign Mbeumo ahead of United.
Player | Appearances | Goals | Assists | Minutes |
Bryan Mbeumo | 42 | 20 | 8 | 2.577′ |
Brennan Johnson | 51 | 18 | 7 | 3.316′ |
Mbeumo has thrived under Frank since he joined Brentford in 2019.
This forward was involved in 29 goals in 42 appearances for the Bees this season. Frank has helped mould Mbeumo into the player he is today, and both have formed a relationship based on mutual respect.
Therefore, should Frank succeed Postecoglou, this could help Tottenham to convince Mbeumo to reconsider his transfer to United.
And if Tottenham do sign Mbeumo, they could look to sell Johnson, which would be rather shocking considering the Welshman was Spurs’ top scorer this season.

Tottenham should keep Johnson
The signing of Mbeumo does not automatically mean that Johnson must be sold this summer.
Tottenham will need squad depth to compete domestically and in the UEFA Champions League next season. Johnson has demonstrated on numerous occasions that he is an excellent option off the bench.
The limited squad depth at Tottenham has caused a drop in performance, particularly for players who are guaranteed a starting spot.
Mbeumo could provide some friendly competition on the right wing and set a new precedent at the club. One that makes clear that to start, you must consistently perform.
Therefore, Tottenham must focus on building and maintaining a large squad in addition to incomings this summer.
