Seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams had women’s tennis in a stranglehold for nearly two decades before retiring in 2022, and her years at the top have earned her a staggering fortune
American tennis icon Serena Williams dominated the grass courts of Wimbledon for nearly two decades, winning her first title there in 2002.
Her last success at the All England Club came 14 years later, in 2016, when she defeated Angelique Kerber in straight sets to lift her seventh Wimbledon crown. As action continues in SW19 this year, the women’s game is a stranger to such dominance.
Williams retired in 2022 with an unfathomable 23 Grand Slam titles to her name. She now enjoys her life with American entrepreneur and investor husband Alexis Ohanian and their two daughters, Olympia, seven, and Adira, one.
The superstar couple has a staggering combined net worth, though this has caused friction in the past regarding their children. We take a look at Williams’ life without a racket, including her vast fortune, plush Florida home, ‘inspiring’ fitness journey and why she’s absent from Wimbledon this year.
What is Serena Williams’ net worth?
Throughout her years flying the flag for the WTA Tour, Williams has amassed an estimated fortune of £220million. This was built up by her on-court winnings and via a range of endorsements, such as Nike, Gatorade and Beats by Dre.
Williams’ husband, Reddit co-founder Ohanian, is successful in his own right, and through his various ventures, has a fortune that stands at £110m, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
That puts the couple’s combined fortune at around £330m, but they harmlessly clashed over how much of this would go on their eldest daughter’s allowance. Ohanian explained that Olympia receives a £5 weekly allowance for doing household chores, but Williams once disagreed with her husband and pushed for her daughter to get weekends off.
Ohanian admitted: “Yes, Olympia’s got a contract. £5-a-week allowance, negotiated by her mom (who somehow got her weekends off). Feed the dog, clothes in the hamper, make her bed, get paid. We’re trying to build the muscle: work = reward. Good things come when you work for it.
“Serena was her lawyer in the negotiation,” he explained. “I drew up a real contract. Her mom was her counsel, which was really frustrating. She’s gotta feed the dog, put her clothes in the hamper, makes her bed.
“We’re trying to create that flywheel between doing the work and getting the money, and then understanding that there are things you could want.”
Where does Serena Williams live?
Williams called on sister Venus, a seven-time Grand Slam winner herself, and her interior design firm, V Starr, some years ago to help create a dream home.
This came soon after Williams had met her future husband, and she told Architectural Digest: “We had just met. And I wasn’t going to be like, ‘Hey, let’s do this together.’
“That would have been really weird for him. I was moving away from Venus for the first time in my life, so I wanted it (the house) to be really meaningful.”
All of this culminated in a beautiful Palm Beach mansion, with a trophy room, a hidden karaoke suite and an infinity pool. Her daughters also have their own rooms, and there is a nursery for young Adira.
However, this Florida property does not have a tennis court on site, as the retired Williams admitted she “wanted to separate home from work.”
What is Serena Williams’ fitness regime?
Heading into retirement having given birth to two children, Williams is still inspiring fans with her fitness regimen. She has also taken to cryotherapy after what she dubbed an ‘intense’ weight loss journey. This practice is said to have a range of health benefits, including weight loss. It is a treatment that uses extreme cold to freeze and destroy abnormal tissue.
Taking to Instagram, she shared a picture of her journey, writing: “What an experience. I lasted the full three minutes this time. I can’t wait to share my wellness journey with all of you.”
She later added: “I was trying to make cryotherapy, couture. I failed. Day 1, I did 2 min 45 sec at -110 degrees. Let’s see how long I last tomorrow.”
Cryotherapy is not all Williams does to stay fit now that she’s hung up her racket, however. She’s been seen sporting a slimmed-down figure after the birth of her second daughter, admitting online that she has “been gym-ing a lot” and has been watching her diet.
“I do HIIT (high-intensity interval training) workouts, a little stretching, a little strength training, but mostly cardio training,” she told Vogue in 2022.
Why is Serena Williams not at Wimbledon 2025?
As action got underway in SW19 for 2025, there was no Williams to be seen. Since retiring in 2022, the American has been enjoying her retirement, and this year, she has chosen to jet off on holiday with Wimbledon in full swing.
During the first day of the Championships, pictures posted online showed Williams and family soaking up the sun in Sardinia on a luxury yacht just off the coast.
Eldest daughter Olympia and her father could be seen enjoying the pristine sea before being dragged around on an inflatable by a jet ski, alongside a friend.
This trip to the Mediterranean comes soon after she spent time at Cannes Lions earlier in June, where she announced that she and her sister, Venus, would be starting a podcast.
