The Canaries have been credited with an interest in the 16-year-old throughout the summer, and it’s understood a deal to bring him to Norfolk is close.
Wilkes made his senior debut for Fleetwood in a 3-2 loss to Aston Villa’s U21s in the EFL Trophy last August and has represented England at both U15 and U16 level.
An attacking midfielder, Wilkes has been a regular in Fleetwood’s development side and was the only player present attached to a club outside of the Premier League and Championship when called up to England U15s last year.
There has reportedly been strong interest from elsewhere in the midfielder, but City’s reputation for developing talent and providing strong pathways from academy to senior football is a strong pull.
Norwich are working on adding to their development pools this summer and have already signed Stevenage goalkeeper Rylee Mitchell to be part of Olly Lee’s U21 squad.
They also hold an interest in Swindon attacker Botan Ameen, along with Ipswich midfielder Luke Towler, who spent time on trial with City’s academy at the end of the season. Coventry and Wales youth goalkeeper Luis Lines is also thought to be of interest.
