DETROIT — Former Detroit Tigers left-hander Matt Gage has signed a minor-league contract with the San Francisco Giants, the organization that drafted him 11 years ago.
He’ll report to Triple-A Sacramento.
Gage, 32, was designated for assignment by the Tigers seven days ago. He went unclaimed on waivers and declined an outright assignment to Triple-A Toledo, electing free agency instead. He didn’t have to wait long to find a new home.
Gage threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings of relief during a brief stint with Detroit before being DFA’d to clear a roster spot for Dietrich Enns, who is scheduled to make his second start for the Tigers on Thursday in Washington.
A New York native, Gage played college baseball at Siena and was selected by the Giants in the 10th round of the 2014 draft. He advanced to Triple-A within a few years but was released in 2018, beginning a winding journey that included stops with multiple MLB organizations, a stint in Mexico, and time in independent ball during the pandemic.
After tweaking his mechanics and finding success as a reliever, Gage earned his first big-league call-up with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2022. He later spent time with the Astros and bounced between the Dodgers and Mets before signing with Detroit this past offseason.
With the Mud Hens, Gage posted a 1.67 ERA in 32 1/3 innings, striking out 28 and walking just four, earning his promotion to Detroit on June 12.
